Lansdowne is a beautiful hilly town that is located in Uttarakhand, India. It is about 81 kms. from Pauri and is situated at a height of 1,706 metres above sea level. It is famous among the tourists for its serene environment. So much so, that it is highly regarded as one of the quietest hill stations in India. The calm surroundings and the beautiful environment of Lansdowne is sure to please any visitor visiting the place.
Uptil the late 1970s Lansdowne was the only city other than Almora which was the cultural hub of the state of Uttarakhand. It got its name from Lord Lansdowne, who was the then Viceroy of India during the period of 1888 - 1894. It is a beautiful place which brings in tourists from all over the world. The most attractive feature of this place being the serene environment coupled with the wonderful weather, which makes it a perfect combination. It is not only enjoyable during the summers but is also visited during the winters, when it is extremely cold.
Earlier, during the British days, Lansdowne used to serve as the base for the various kind of activities carried out by the freedom fighters. Presently, Lansdowne has the command office of the Garhwal Rifles division of the Indian Army.
Lansdowne is surrounded by beautiful oak and pine forests all around which provides a captivating view of the landscapes. It is surely one of the most beautiful hill stations in the northern India.
