Badrinath
Badrinath is one of the most important pilgrim destinations of
Uttarakhand today and is also a part of the sacred 'Char Dham'. It is
surrounded by the Nar and Narayan mountains while the Neelkanth Peak
forms a majestic backdrop. This temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and
it was established by Adi Shankaracharya and was built by the rulers of
the Garhwal about two hundred years ago. The main idol is carved of
black stone and it represents a meditating Lord Vishnu.
Tapt Kund
Tapt Kund is a holy spring which is located in front of the temple that
is situated on the banks of River Alaknanda. A pilgrim must take a dip
in the hot water here before entering the shrine. The temple located
here opens each year in the month of April-May and closes during the
winters.
Hemkund Sahib
Situated at an altitude of 4,329 metres above sea level, Hemkund Sahib
has a sacred gurudwara near the lake which is one of the most important
Sikh pilgrim centres of Uttarakhand that is visited by a large number of
Sikh and Hindu pilgrims. The word Hemkund, in literal sense means 'Snow
Lake'.
