Bat Savitri festival is yet another very popular
festival of Uttarakhand. This festival is not only celebrated in
Uttarakhand but in the whole of India by the married women for the well
being of their husband. The Bat Savitri festival is generally celebrated
on the last day of the dark half of the month of Jyeshtha, according to
the Hindu calendar.
In this festival, women worship Savitri, who is known to have bought
her husband back from the dead with her devotion towards him. Women,
during this festival also worship the holy tree Bat or Banyan because
the Banyan tree is regarded as a holy tree. Legends have it that
Satyavan took shelter under a banyan tree when death was about to take
him. This festival is celebrated every year during the last day of the
dark half of the month, in the month of Jyesha.
